The Cotton Industry Biosecurity Plan was officially launched in 2006, and Cotton Australia is subsequently responsible for biosecurity stewardship. Cotton Australia’s role and responsibility as the industry participant in the national biosecurity framework entails representation and involvement in national debate, policy development and implementation, prioritisation of resources, and decision making.
Cotton Australia recognises the need for the cotton industry to continue to work together with the federal and state governments to help reduce the potential for incursions of emergency plant pests and diseases that could adversely impact on domestic and international trade, the regional economy and environment. The cotton industry is committed to ensuring responses to any pest incursions that may occur are undertaken as effectively as possible to minimise costs to growers, the industry, other plant industries, government parties and the wider community.
The Cotton Industry Biosecurity Group (see list below) is made up of researchers and Cotton Australia member representatives as well as representatives from Plant Health Australia and the Australian Government. It meets annually to scope current industry biosecurity issues and ensures that it meets a number of industry responsibilities under the Emergency Plant Pest Response (EPPR) Deed that fall each new financial year.
Plant Health Australia is the peak body for plant biosecurity and is responsible for working with its members to manage projects and co ordinate the development of national plant health policy and capability in Australia. Cotton Australia is a member of Plant Health Australia as the leading body for cotton industry biosecurity.
