New Growers
You are joining about 800 cotton growers in NSW and Queensland who are committed to a sustainable, efficient industry producing a high quality crop for the world market. You should be aware that you are entering an industry that takes its responsibilities to the environment, workers and the communities in which it operates very seriously and you should understand these responsibilities before considering planting your first cotton crop.
There is an enormous range of support, tools, resources and advice available to growers entering the cotton industry, and an industry structure that supports both new and existing growers to ensure the highest quality cotton production standards are achieved.
If you are a first-time grower or haven’t planted cotton for a while, it’s important to follow these basic first steps:
Step 1
Contact a Cotton Australia Grower Services Manager who will give you a full briefing on the industry and will make sure you get all the information and contacts you need for your local area. Go to the contacts page for details of the Cotton Australia office closest to you.
Step 2
Obtain a copy of the Cotton Australia New Grower Kit that explains some basic information about the cotton industry in Australia, what to expect, the questions you need to ask, your responsibilities as well as useful contacts.
Ask your Cotton Australia Grower Services Manager or download the New Grower Kit.
Step 3
Become familiar with the industry’s Best Management Practices (BMP) program. This is a voluntary system of sustainable farm management that will ensure your operation finds the balance between sustainability and profitability. The Best Management Practices manual is a practical how-to that covers topics such as farm design, farm hygiene, pest management, land and water management and soil health.
Your nearest Cotton Australia Grower Services Manager will introduce you to BMP and provide you with a FREE BMP Manual and you can go to the BMP section of this website to find out more.
